Valkyrie: 7.4 out of 10

When I started this blog, I pledged to be more active about posting, mostly because all of the cool names I could come up with for blogs, especially critically cynical blogs such as my own, were already taken. So here I am, after a month and a half of inactivity, with another movie review.

Valkyrie was entertaining. Usually when I go to the movies I am looking to be entertained, and this movie did just that. It had an intriguing story line (based on a true story) about a coup/plot to assassinate Hitler. Obviously, we know before beginning that this plot failed (which enfuriated me even more when the lady behind me says, "so they didn't really kill Hitler, did they?" to her husband, halfway through the movie.) Regardless, the plot is involved and the way the events unfold is above par, at least.

Tom Wilkinson, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, and Terrence Stamp all prove well in supporting roles, and Cruise does a good job himself. A lot of people are talking about how they can't get over how crazy Tom Cruise is, but who gives a crap? I don't know Tom personally, and neither does any of these people, so let's just accept his acting at face value. It is a bit odd that most of the actors have all different types of English accents and Tom's is overly-American, but it saves us the pain of having to try to decipher an unnecessary German-English accent, or even having to deal with subtitles, when none of the actors probably speaks German. That said, the script is good; cliche in spots, but good nonetheless.

There is a healthy amount of drama, action, and yes, a dose of comedy, evenly sparced throughout, and the result is (another) Holocaust/Hitler movie that doesn't suck.

P.S. I was probably more excited afterwards about the new Wolverine: Origins trailer than I was about the movie itself...
